What is the NPK Intercultural Mediator certification?

An intercultural mediator builds bridges between different cultures and promotes understanding and cooperation in a diverse society. Their role is to help overcome language and cultural barriers and facilitate effective communication between individuals and institutions.

Through its work, it supports the inclusion of immigrants, migrants, and other vulnerable groups in education, employment, and the local community. It collaborates with schools, health and social service institutions, and nongovernmental organizations, and contributes to greater cohesion, tolerance, and social inclusion.

The work of an intercultural mediator is dynamic, socially significant, and well-suited for anyone who enjoys working with people, embracing diversity, and bringing about positive change.

Special Requirements for Obtaining a National Vocational Qualification

To obtain the national vocational qualification of Intercultural Mediator, a candidate must meet the specific requirements set forth in the Catalog of Standards and Competencies.

Special Conditions for Joining the NPK

To obtain the NPK certificate as an intercultural mediator, you must meet the following requirements:

• A minimum level of education equivalent to SOK 5 or a certificate of successful completion of a proficiency test issued by the National Examination Center (RIC) (Regulation on the Methods and Conditions for Ensuring the Rights of Persons Under International Protection) and
• At least 300 hours of intercultural mediation, completed by the candidate within the last five years, as evidenced by letters of reference from organizations, associations, institutions, etc. Of the aforementioned 300 hours, up to 100 hours may be substantiated by a statement from the user(s) or immigrant(s)—that is, those for whom the candidate performed intercultural mediation—and
• proof of language proficiency:
  • Proficiency in the Slovenian language at least at the B1 level, which the candidate must demonstrate by providing a diploma indicating at least SOK 5 level in the Republic of Slovenia or a publicly recognized certificate of a passed Slovenian language proficiency exam demonstrating proficiency at least at the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in reading, listening, and speaking, and at least at the A2 level in writing and
  • proficiency in at least one other language, which the candidate must demonstrate with a letter of recommendation from organizations, associations, institutions, etc.

The candidate demonstrates his or her knowledge through official certificates issued by accredited educational institutions.

What is the process for obtaining an NPK?

Once you have met all the requirements for obtaining an NPK, you can apply for the NPK certification process.

Obtaining a National Vocational Qualification (NPK) certificate follows a clearly defined procedure that allows candidates to demonstrate the knowledge and experience they have gained through work, training, or informal learning.

The entire process is divided into three main steps:

Cost of the procedure

The fee for the NPK verification and certification process is 267.00 EUR and includes:

• providing information, guidance, and support to the candidate throughout the entire process,
• individual counseling and assistance in preparing a personal portfolio,
• a professional review of the application portfolio and a determination of whether the requirements have been met,
• direct assessment of practical knowledge and competencies.
