ERASMUS+ Strengthening Personal Responsibility in the Prison System for Social Sustainability

Through this project, we will develop a training program on sustainable development for teachers and staff in the prison system, enabling educators and prison staff to become advocates for sustainable behavior and practices among inmates.

Project Objective:

Through this project, we aim to promote a culture of sustainability among teachers and staff in the prison system so that sustainable practices among inmates become an integral part of prison operations. We will promote cooperation and the exchange of best practices between the two countries with the aim of developing a training program for teachers and staff in the prison system. In this way, we will enhance the competencies, knowledge, and skills of teachers and other correctional system staff regarding sustainability so that they can incorporate these into their daily routines when working with inmates and into educational programs.

Project Objectives:

develop a training program for teachers and staff in the prison system that focuses on sustainable practices,
train multipliers to disseminate knowledge in the field of sustainable development,
to raise awareness and understanding of sustainable practices among teachers and staff in the prison system,
to improve the competencies, knowledge, and skills of teachers and other staff in the prison system regarding sustainability,
develop resources and teaching aids that teachers and staff in the prison system can use to encourage inmates to take responsibility for implementing sustainable practices,
to promote cooperation and the exchange of knowledge among teachers and staff in the prison system in two different countries.

Expected results:

trained advocates for sustainable development,
the exchange of experiences and best practices between the two countries regarding the implementation of sustainable development principles in working with prisoners,
a training program on sustainable development for teachers and prison system staff,
pilot implementations of the program were carried out,
project subpages on both partners’ websites, where we will post updates on promotional and dissemination activities,
Various promotional and dissemination activities will be carried out, including a closing conference for relevant stakeholders, where we will present the long-term application of the project’s results and the planned activities following the project’s completion.

Target groups:

The primary target group consists of teachers and other staff members in the prison system who are in direct or indirect contact with inmates.

The secondary target group consists of incarcerated individuals.

Project implementation period:

1. 9. 2023 – 28. 2. 2025

Promotion and Dissemination

The FirstINthenOUT project, which was designed to promote sustainable practices in the prison system, successfully concluded with a closing conference where we presented the results and lessons learned. The event was attended by representatives of the prison systems of Slovenia and Croatia, educators, and prison staff who participated in the pilot implementations of sustainable education.

What have we accomplished?

As part of the project, we developed and piloted an educational program for prison staff that promotes sustainable practices and responsible resource management. Participants gained practical skills in the following areas:

Responsible Use of Energy and Water
Waste Separation and Recycling
Uses of Sustainable Hygiene and Cleaning Products
A Healthy Lifestyle and Sustainable Diet

As part of the project, we have prepared a handbook with practical tips for improving sustainability in six key areas:

Road Closure Posters – Sustainability in Plain Sight!

Based on the content of the booklet, posters were created that are specifically designed for the prison environment. These posters convey key messages about sustainable practices and can serve as a visual incentive for inmates and staff to act sustainably.

By displaying posters in correctional facilities, staff and inmates can easily raise awareness on a daily basis about the importance of conserving resources, responsible waste management, and a healthy lifestyle.

Sustainability as the Key to Change!

The FirstINthenOUT project, co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ program, has laid the groundwork for sustainable development within the prison system. Participants learned how to incorporate sustainable practices into their daily work routines and how to share them with inmates, which is crucial for their reintegration into society.
